A conversation on playgrounds, education and culture, examining how different structures of play influence creativity, learning and risk.

About the Program:

Play is often understood as something light or spontaneous, yet it also operates as a powerful structure shaping how we learn, experiment and relate to the world. This panel discussion expands the idea of play beyond childhood, considering how it functions across education, culture and creative practice.

Presented as part of the PLAYERS exhibition program, the conversation will explore how environments, rules and social contexts shape the ways play unfolds, from playground design to artistic experimentation. The discussion reflects on the balance between structure and freedom, and how different frameworks of play can influence creativity, collaboration and risk-taking.

The panel features Venice-based photographer James Mollison (via Zoom), alongside Sydney artists Mike Hewson and Nadia Odlum, and Fiona Robbé, a landscape architect and horticulturist specialising in the design of outdoor children’s environments. Moderated by Sep Pourbozorgi, the discussion considers play not simply as recreation, but as a serious mode of inquiry that shapes how we understand the world around us.

The program is proudly presented in partnership with the Italian Cultural Institute Sydney, a presenting partner of the exhibition, for more information about the Italian Cultural Institute Sydney click here.
